The Next Best Thing
a project for Devine
1. Concept summary

First, I described the problem that is being adressed. This problem is the following:

"How might we help people to find a toilet when they're out on the streets in a city center?"

During the brainstorm phase, a second possible angle to the problem appeared, which was the following:

"How might we help people to not forget about paying a visit to the bathroom before leaving a building?

I chose the first HMW (How Might We) - question to arrive to  a solution. The solution I propose to this problem is to develop an app that shows you the nearest public bathrooms on a map. Think about library's, police stations and many other places. I think this concept is valuable to the end user, because it enables the user to find bathrooms at their disposal at any place and time.
2. The problem
Based on this problem, I developed a problem storyboard.
3. Ideation
In order to arrive to a solution, I first did a broad brainstorm. Several brainstorm techniques were used. The brainstorm was then documented in a Miro Board. You can find it here:

After this, I proceeded to choose a top 3 of ideas and further developed these ideas through sketches.

My top 3:

1. An app that shows the nearest public bathrooms on a map. Think about library's, police stations and many other places where you can go to the toilet. Or you adapt existing navigations apps with this feature.
2. An app that uses your data and AI to know when you order drinks in a restaurant or café. Whenever it picks up on this activity, it sends you a reminder - notification to use the bathroom. It should send this notification right before you reach the exit of the building to leave.
3. In the app of the restaurant, where you also proceed your payment, there is an extra feature built in that will help you. After the payment was successful, it the app pops up a message that reminds you / kindly invites you to use the restaurants' toilet before leaving, and it also wishes you a great return home.
4. The solution
In the end, I created a solution storyboard from the first solution out of my top 3.
5. The pitch
6. Reflection on the project
Looking back on this project, I feel very proud because I learned so many new skills that I can now grow in and get better at.

The biggest lesson I learned, is to not be afraid of pitching or any other public speaking. I used to feel very insecure about talking to an audience, but now I feel like I have a different angle towards it and realise it is an important opportunity to communicate your creative ideas.

The second lesson I learned is to break a problem down through a problem storyboard. This way, you discover different 'how might we'-questions that show different angles of the problem. All these angles then lead to multiple solutions.

A third important lesson I learned is different brainstorm techniques. These were very helpful to challenge myself to think about creative solutions, and not only the most obvious solutions.
